What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment
Nervous about your first physiotherapy session? Here's exactly what happens, step by step, so you know what to expect.
Starting physiotherapy for the first time can feel like a step into the unknown, especially if you're dealing with pain or an injury and aren't sure what a session actually involves. Here's a straightforward walk-through of what to expect, whether you're booking in-clinic or online.
### Before your appointment
You don't need a GP referral to book, you can self-refer directly. If you have any relevant medical notes, scan results, or a surgeon's post-op protocol, it's worth bringing them (or sharing them ahead of an online appointment), since it helps your physiotherapist build an accurate picture from the start.
**What to wear:** loose, comfortable clothing that lets your physiotherapist see and move the affected area. For a knee or hip assessment, for example, shorts make things much easier than jeans.
### During the assessment
Your physiotherapist will start by asking about your symptoms: when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how they're affecting your daily life. They'll then assess your movement directly, in clinic this might mean testing a joint's range of motion or checking strength; online, they'll ask you to perform specific movements on camera so they can observe your posture and mobility just as closely.
This isn't a rushed process. A thorough first assessment usually takes longer than a follow-up session, because it's building the foundation for everything that comes after.
### After the assessment
You'll leave with a working diagnosis and the start of a personalised treatment plan, not a generic exercise sheet. Depending on your condition, this might include hands-on treatment (in-clinic only), a home exercise programme, or both. Your physiotherapist will also give you a realistic sense of what to expect going forward, how many sessions are typical, and when you'll next be reviewed.
"Targeted physiotherapy assessments and customized home exercise programs play a vital role in regaining full functional mobility and long-term joint health."
